Donovan McNabb officially retired as an Eagle yesterday.

Yesterday at the NovaCare Complex, Donovan McNabb officially retired from the NFL as a Philadelphia Eagles. The announcement was made in front of a packed auditorium filled with former Eagles, current Eagles, media and organizational figures. The celebration of McNabb’s career in Philadelphia will culminate in September when his #5 jersey will be retired as the Eagles take on Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs.

The retirement news has spawned the debate of whether or not McNabb deserves a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. There are indeed a number of categories that voters take into consideration including numbers, success and ultimately championships.

McNabb shines in some of these categories and lacks in others, but is the whole body of work deserving of a bust in Canton?

While some experts are proponents of the “feel” method for potential Hall of Famers, you can not ignore numbers. Relying on the idea that you just get a feeling when you see a Hall of Famer play does not do justice to the player.

McNabb’s numbers have to stack up against other quarterbacks that have been immortalized. Here is how 5 stacks up:

Donovan McNabb led the Eagles to 5 NFC Championship appearances and a Superbowl appearances.

Donovan McNabb led the Eagles to 5 NFC Championship appearances and a Superbowl appearances.

So that is McNabb stacked up against five current Hall of Fame quarterbacks based on several key statistics for quarterbacks.

Another factor that Hall of Fame voters should take into consideration is franchise transformation. How does a franchise immediately before the arrival of a player compare to the franchise after that player has had their impact on it.

When all the factors are considered, Donovan McNabb is deserving of a spot in the Hall of Fame. The numbers support and his impact on the Eagles as a franchise supports it. McNabb would not sit a top the list of Hall of Fame quarterbacks, but to say he does not belong is tough to support with numbers or feelings.
