Eagles Training Camp Set to Begin

Chip Kelly will begin his first training camp with the Eagles today.

Today marks the official start of the first Eagles training camp under new head coach Chip Kelly. The first year NFL coach has decided to move the camp from Lehigh University to the Novacare Complex here in Philadelphia.

Select practices will be open to the public and held at Lincoln Financial Field.

That will not be the only change from the Andy Reid era. There will be a lot of new sights and sounds to look out for this year. There will be new drills, tempo, players, schemes, strategies and positional battles that will make this training camp quite unique.

Kelly gave us all a sneak preview of what to expect in terms of how he runs a practice during OTA’s. Remember the loud blasting music and the uptempo pace. Kelly’s strategy was based on installing the system, running the system, and correcting the mistakes in the classroom. Efficiency ruled and not a second of time on the field was wasted on anything but reps.

Expect that same philosophy to be in place during training camp. The current collective bargaining agreement stifles NFL coaches in terms of the amount of time they can have their players practicing and what exactly the players are allowed to do.

With that being the case, Kelly will most likely leak every rep he can out of his players in the time he can have them on the field.

We will have to see if the music makes a return during training camp, and if so perhaps Kelly will choose to motivate his guys with a newly released song from one of their very own (“Diamonds on My Neck” DeSean Jackson ft. Snoop Dogg).

Another interesting component to this will be how exactly Kelly chooses to run the offense.

You have to assume that the signal calling in practice will mimic games quite closely and at Oregon, Kelly and his staff utilized interesting play-calling techniques that included signage on the sidelines.

How Kelly chooses to call the offense will have a direct correlation to what quarterback he ultimately goes with.

There has been a lot of baseless speculation about Kelly’s offense but one thing that is certain is that Kelly is about tempo and efficiency and the quarterback that embodies those things most will win the job.

The choice is down to Michael Vick, Nick Foles and there is an outside chance that rookie Matt Barkley may steal the job. There has been some support for Vick from some of the more outspoken Eagles and of course people assume Vick has the edge because of his legs.

People hear speed in association with Kelly’s offense and immediately think running but when it comes to the quarterback position, the speed Kelly is looking for deals with decision making and getting to the line of scrimmage.

Quarterback is just one of many positional battles to look forward to.

Can Bill Davis return to the Eagles defense back to dominance?

Can Bill Davis return to the Eagles defense back to dominance?

The overshadowed facet of the Kelly era has been the defense. New defensive coordinator Bill Davis will be tasked with transitioning this underachieving defensive unit to a new scheme that will feature the 3-4.

That means getting players like Trent Cole and Brandon Graham, who have exclusively played with their hands in the ground in the pros, to be able to stand up and drop back at times.

There is no secret that much like Reid, Kelly is an offensive guy. Expect Davis to have a lot of freedom over the defense much like Jim Johnson did in his time under Reid.

This is a camp that Eagles fans have been looking forward to for quite some time and rightfully so. This marks the beginning of a new era of Eagles football, one that will be very different than any era before it. For all the differences that we have seen and will see, the only difference that will truly separate this era will be a Lombardi Trophy at some point during the ride.
