Justin Rose won his first US Open at +1 at Merion Golf Club.

The US Open at Merion proved to be quite the test for a number of the world’s premier golfers but one player certainly ‘Rose’ to the occasion. The Phillies squandered an opportunity to pick up some ground against a weak opponent but once again came up short. DeSean Jackson spent Father’s Day unveiling a documentary that highlights his rise to the NFL and his relationship with his father. Several reports are speculating that the Flyers may be close to buying out goalie Ilya Bryzgalov. The Sixers worked out a crop of prospects on Saturday that included local Big Five star, Khalif Wyatt.

U.S. Open 2013:

Justin Rose won his first U.S. Open and his first major this past weekend at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. Rose became just the second Englishman to ever win the U.S. Open and the first to win a major since Nick Faldo in 1996. Rose came into the U.S. Open ranked #5 in the world and was able to hold off the likes of Jason Day, Hunter Mahan and Phil Mickelson to win the Open. Rose shot an even 70 in the final round to finish the tournament at +1. Despite early predictions that the soften course would give way to historically low scores, no player finished under par or even. Phil Mickelson came up short once again finishing second in the Open for the sixth time in his career, a record for any golfer at the Open.

Phillies:

The Phillies went into the weekend facing the Rockies for a three game set. The Rockies entered he weekend 35-32 and were ailing from several key injuries. Troy Tulowitzki was placed on the DL with a rib fracture. Dexter Fowler was ailing from a hand injury and Carlos Gonzalez was ailing from a bruised left foot. The Phillies were still unable to capitalize. The team came back to win Game 1 of the series 8-7 as Mike Stutes picked up a win in relief and Johnathan Papelbon shut it down for the save. The next two games did not go the Phillies’ way as they lost 10-5 and 5-2. The 5-2 loss was credited to Cole Hamels.

Today the Phillies open up a three game set against the Nationals. John Lannan will be opposed by Dan Haren tonight at 7:05 at Citizen’s Bank Park.

Eagles:

On Sunday, DeSean Jackson unveiled the documentary, DeSean Jackson: The Making of a Father’s Dream, which chronicles much of Jackson’s life and features footage from his childhood. Jackson’s documentary focuses on him but it really hinges on the relationship he had with his father and brother and shows an in depth look at how he was groomed or the NFL. Jackson’s father died in 2009 from a bout with pancreatic cancer and much of his dealings with that is chronicled in the late parts of the movie.

Flyers:

CSNPhilly.com is reporting that the Flyers are discussing internally the possibility of buying out goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov. The outspoken goalie was brought to Philadelphia to put the Flyers over the top but he has under-performed in terms of most people’s expectations and he has become more of a laughing stock than a revered player for the Flyers. The Flyers have two compliance buyouts this offseason and it appears that one will be Danny Briere. Flyers owner, Ed Snider, said that he likes Bryzgalov and wants him to return but recent discussions may prove otherwise.

Sixers:

The Sixers completed a workout on Sunday that featured a number of guard prospects and one who did much of his damage right here in Philadelphia. The Sixers worked out former Temple guard Khalif Wyatt on Saturday alongside Shane Larkin of Miami, Glen Rice Jr from the NBA D-League and Deshaun Thomas from Ohio State. Wyatt was the Big Five and A-10 Player of the Year averaging 20.5 points per game for Fran Dunphy’s Owls. Wyatt put the Owls on his back in a huge regular season win over Syracuse and led the Owls to a NCAA tournament win over NC State. The Owls fell in the second round after putting a scare into Indiana. Despite Wyatt’s scoring ability, there are questions about his defense. Wyatt is projected to go late in the second round or undrafted.
