Andre I”GOLD”ala: Sixers’ Forward Makes Team USA

The 2012 USA Basketball Men’s National Team was annnounced on July 7th in Las Vegas.

Team USA Basketball was announced last night and one of the finalists to make the team was Andre Iguodala. The Sixers forward was a starter on the 2010 USA Team that brought home the gold at the World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey. Despite this distinction, Iguodala was far from a shoe in to make the 2012 team. Iguodala was one of five players (James Harden, Anthony Davis, Eric Gordon, Rudy Gay) battling for the final two spots on the roster. Last night his name was called (See Video) and now A.I. will be heading to London.

Iguodala’s selection onto team USA makes him the third Sixer to suit up for the United States since NBA players were permitted to take part in the games back in 1992. Charles Barkley was the first when he was an original member of the 1992 Dream Team but when he returned from those Olympic Games he played his next NBA game for the Phoenix Suns. The second Sixer to wear the Red, White and Blue was Allen Iverson. He donned the uniform at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, coached by former Sixers coach Larry Brown. Those games were characterized by the United States disappointing bronze medal finish (their only non-gold Olympic finish with NBA players).

Andre Iguodala won gold with Team USA in 2010 at the World Championships and will look to do the same in London.

Iguodala now joins the distinguished brotherhood of Olympians. His head coach, Doug Collins, knows the amount of pride Iguodala is feeling at this time for he to had the opportunity to represent his country in 1972. “Congrats to Dre,” said Collins via the team’s website. “Nobody could be more pleased than I am that he’s starting to get the recognition for being a great player.” Collins will be joining his pupil in London as an NBC analyst for the games.

USA Basketball Olympic Schedule

This has indeed been a momentous year for Iguodala. He received his first All-Star nod and led the Sixers to within one win of a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals. Now he is going to represent the USA for a second straight international competition.

Andre Iguodala beat out Eric Gordon (RFA), Anthony Davis (NOH), and Rudy Gay (MEM) for a spot on Team USA.

Iguodala released this statement via Twitter @mindofai9:

“Very honored to be selected to 2012 USA men’s basketball team. Thanks to all fans and supports for prayers.”!/mindofAI9

This achievement has the potential to be one that boosts the confidence and stock that Iguodala has. He will head across the pond tasked with being a defensive stopper for USA Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski. Iguodala is used to defending the oppositions’ most prolific scorer and he will have plenty of opportunities to do that this summer in London. Iguodala will team up with Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Kevin Durant and the rest of the USA’s best, to once again try to bring home the gold.
